Baxter’s Delaney Barnes signs to John Brown University volleyball

Delaney Barnes is an All-State player for the Lions.

Baxter Springs High School senior Delaney Barnes signed her letter of intent Friday morning to continue her volleyball career at John Brown University.

“From the minute I went there, the community was great. All the people were amazing,” Barnes says, “They just treated me so kindly. The campus is gorgeous and I felt like I was at home already.”

Barnes is an All-State player for the Lions, and has also earned All-CNC honors all four years of her high school career. She finishes her career at BSHS with more than 1,200 kills on the volleyball court, and is also a member of the 1,000-point club for basketball.

She’s excited for the opportunity to get to continue her sports career, especially after seeing COVID-19 prematurely end the careers of some of her classmates.

“A lot of my classmates haven’t had the opportunity to even finish their high school sports lives,” Barnes adds, “I just feel really grateful to keep going and have something that will help me pay for school throughout my college experience. I’m really excited for it.”

Barnes is aiming to get to John Brown University and try to make an impact right off the bat.

“I’m just looking to get as much playing time as I can, especially my freshman year,” Barnes says, “I think I can work super hard and step up and be able to start and help out the team. Hopefully I can get some NAIA recognition or awards. I’m hoping to be able to do big things at JBU. I already started my workouts a couple months ago. I’m ready to be there and play.”

Barnes plans to major in nursing at John Brown University.

“JBU is one of the only schools that I found that will let me play volleyball while getting my nursing degree,” Barnes finishes, “That was another major reason I chose John Brown.”
