Baxter Springs enters first season under Mims

Matt Mims will try to turn around a program that was 0-9 last season.

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. – It’s a new era for Baxter Springs football.

The Lions are entering their first season under head coach Matt Mims. Mims is aiming to turn around a program that was 0-9 last season, and hasn’t finished better than .500 since 2016.

In his first year, he’s got some experience on the roster, with 11 seniors out this year.

Although the team has struggled lately, Mims brings some energy, and he’s ready to build a winning program in 2020 and beyond.

“They’ve been down a little bit lately,” Mims says of the Lions’ program, “This is a chance to rebuild a program, but the future of the program is excellent. I’ve got great seniors right now and great leadership starting out. I told those guys they get to set the bar wherever they want it to be set, and then we’re never going to lower the bar for the next class. That’s the most important thing. Building a program from the 3rd grade all the way up to the 12th grade is what we’re trying to do in Baxter Springs.”

“Coach has really brought a new tempo to our team,” adds senior OL/DL Peyton Herrenbruck, “It’s a lot more high energy, and we’re ready to play.”

Baxter Springs will be at home on Friday night for their first game of the season, hosting the Riverton Rams.
