Barbara M George

Barbara George, the widow of Sheldon Morton, passed away in her sleep at Grove Nursing Center on Sunday from complications of overcoming Covid-19 and other preconditions.

Barbara George was born in Tahlequah on December 29, 1950, to Johnnye Louise Rueckert and Benjamin Barton George. She was the youngest of her siblings, Carl George and Beverly George.

Born and raised in Tahlequah, Barbara learned at an early age about caring for animals, hard work, protecting others, selfless love, and sharing what she has learned to anyone willing to listen. Barbara took those lessons to heart and ventured into the world. She received a B.A in Theatre from Northeastern Oklahoma State University and completed her M.A. in Theatre from North Texas State University. She has also served as an Assistant Professor of L.S.U-Eunice and an Associate Professor and Department Chairman for Bacone College. She pursued a career in theater, acted in television, acted in movies like Office Space, commercials in New York City, performed in off-Broadway productions, directed plays, and various summer productions throughout the country. Barbara’s flawless work made her a SAG-AFTRA member under her stage name Barbara George-Reiss.

Barbara was an active member of many organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union, Humane Society International, National Park Foundation, National Wildlife Federation, St. Joseph’s Indian School, and more. Life came full circle when she decided to move back to Oklahoma. She came to Miami, OK, and was the chairman of the Fine Arts Department at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. Barbara taught her students and loved them as if they were her children. She lived her life and taught her students through love, genuine love. Now she is at rest with her true love Sheldon Morton, her parents, and her dogs Maggie, Quincy, Shiloh, and Godiva.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Sheldon Morton, on February 20, 2022. Survivors include one son, Jeremy Fox of Los Angles, CA; one daughter, Shanika Randolph of Little Rock, AR; one sister, Beverly Thompson of Sapulpa, Ok; one brother, Carl George of Tahlequah, OK; one niece, Sara Nunez of Corona, CA; one nephew, Ryan Thompson of Tulsa, OK. Dearest friends Maria Nichols of Miami, Marcello Nichols of Miami, Deborah Neel of Texas, Chris Burk of Chicago, and Billy Purvis of Chicago; myriad other family members, cousins, and many loving and devoted friends and loved ones.
