Baking with Sweet Designs Cakery

Being useful in a kitchen has never been Jesse’s thing.

That’s why we sent him to learn from one of the best in the area – Heather Horton, owner of Sweet Designs Cakery in Pittsburg. She and her husband, Roger, decided to start him off with a simple recipe to introduce him to the art of baking.

Turns out, he’s not as terrible as we thought.

Recipe for Heather & Roger’s Sugar Cookies:


2 3/4 c. Flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 lrg egg
1/2 lb. butter softened
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/8 c. Granulated Sugar


Using stand mixer with a paddle cream butter & sugar together for about 5 minutes. Scrape sides of bowl. Add eggs and flavoring. Mix dry ingredients in separate bowl. Add dry ingredients to butter mixture. Mix well. Scrape sides. Put handful of dough between two sheets of parchment paper. Roll to desired thickness. Use a cookie cutter to cut desired amount of cookies and place on baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes until slightly golden brown. *Ovens vary.*
