Australia, Oklahoma fugitive arrested in Joplin for child sexual abuse, molestation
JOPLIN, Mo. – Joplin Police arrest a fugitive who has warrants out of Australia and Oklahoma for child sexual abuse and lewd molestation.
Tulsa County, Oklahoma police began investigating Trevor Rombouts, 52, in 2019. During their investigation, they discovered six victims total out of Australia, Texas and Oklahoma.
Tulsa Police Detective S.J. Murphy, through Interpol communication with the Australian Federal Police, learned the earliest alleged crimes were in Australia in 1990. Police there suspect Rombouts of sexually abusing a 5-year-old, 4-year-old and 2-week-old in 1990. Authorities out of Victoria, Australia had issued a warrant for his arrest at that time.
According to court documents, the next alleged sexual abuse incident happened in Crane, Texas between 2002 and 2006. A victim told Det. Murphy that Rombouts sexually abused her when she was between the ages of 5 and 9-years-old. KOAM reached out to Crane Police Chief Jason Little. He says they don’t have any open or closed cases involving child sex crimes against Rombouts. They do have a theft conviction on him from 2008.
Detective Murphy also spoke to two sisters who say Rombouts sexually abused them between 2007 and 2012 in Tulsa and Jenks, Oklahoma when they were between the ages of 3-8 and 14-15.
Murphy reached out to Rombouts. According to court documents, Rombouts “initially agreed to come to the main police station to be interviewed regarding the allegations made against him. The defendant failed to show up to be interviewed, and he later stated during a telephone conversation that the allegations made against him were false.”
Murphy says Rombouts also stated “that he had an attorney representing him and he was advised not to give a statement at that time to the police.”
Tulsa County prosecutors charged Trevor Rombouts with two counts of child sexual abuse and two counts of lewd molestation. A district judge signed a warrant for his arrest on Feb. 4, 2020. His last known address was in Tulsa.
On Feb. 24, Joplin Police confirm they arrested Rombouts on the 2700 block of South Kentucky.
