An experienced Lamar team aims to defend state title

The Tigers begin their pursuit for another state championship, holding their first fall practice on Monday.

LAMAR, Mo. – Year after year, the standard at Lamar is high. Expectations for the 2021 season are no different.

“The pressure is always high. Like I said I think our guys like that pressure,” says Lamar head coach Jared Beshore. “It’s something that they’ve grown up with and the program’s had for a long time. It comes with the territory. We really try to put it to the side and limit our distractions and try to get better each and every day. Take it day by day. Can we win today? Can we get better today?”

“Of course, we want to be able to go is state like last year, but we can’t focus on that right now. We have to focus on our upcoming games and every week, week by week,” says senior offensive and defensive linemen, Tucker Torbeck.

The Tigers return 11 starters and 25 lettermen. They have the talent to be a real threat, once again.

“We’re excited,” Torbeck says. “We’re ready to get out here, have a good time and work like we always do.”

“They’re tough. They’re a tough group,” Beshore says. “They will try to out work you in any way that they can and they’ve got some talent. They do. We have a lot of returning starters, so we have some guys that have been there on the game field on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons. Experience level is definitely going to be on our side. We just have to put that to use. We have to take advantage of it.”

The biggest change will be new leaders emerging on the field.

“That’s the hurdle that we’re coming through this year – trying to develop leaders with our senior class and our upperclassmen and going from there,” Beshore says. “When you’re an older guy that’s experienced, you have to bring the younger guys along with you, because if you don’t, then the program is not going to be able to continue. That’s a big pish that we push that we push with our guy’s leadership wise and just trying to continue the tradition that’s been set here.”

Lamar plays their first game of the season on August 27th at home against Springfield Catholic.
