American Legion in Joplin properly disposes of withered flags to celebrate Flag Day

JOPLIN, Mo. – Joplin’s American Legion today celebrated Flag Day by conducting a flag retirement.

The event encouraged residents to bring a retired U.S. or state flag for proper disposal.

“It’s a symbol of our country and from a veteran’s perspective we all fought and served under that flag and it means a great deal to us so its very important to us that its shown the greatest amount of respect,” said Bob Harrington, Commander of American Legion Post 13.

Officials say residents should regularly inspect their flags to determine if they need to be properly disposed of.
