The Pittsburg State University women’s basketball team opened MIAA play Wednesday (Dec 5) with a 75-65 home win over Northeastern State University.

The Gorillas (5-1, 1-0 MIAA) never trailed in the final 38 minutes of play against NSU (2-6, 0-1 MIAA). Pitt State took a 5-4 lead on Kaylee DaMitz’ driving basket with 7:54 to play in the first quarter and the Gorillas never looked back. The Gorillas built a 15-point second half cushion before settling for the 10-point win

Athena Alvarado posted a double-double with game highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds. Shelby Lopez added 13 points and DaMitz finished with 12. The Gorillas made 30 of 74 shots from the floor in the game (.405).

NSU got 16 points and 12 rebounds from Bailee Eldred. Cenia Hayes (14) and Joe Bertrand (10) also scored in double figures.
