Drug-maker AbbVie is donating $100 million to Ronald McDonald House Charities, which help provide housing to pediatric patients and their families throughout the United States.

The donation, announced Monday, is the largest ever single gift to the Chicago based charity network. The money will be used in at least twenty-six states to build housing and toward family expenses such as food, laundry services, and parking. Construction projects will include six hundred new sleeping rooms which will allow for 230,000 additional night stays at 32 houses that have projects in the works. Ronald McDonald Houses serve families who need to stay close to children getting treatment in hospitals. Other construction projects will include classrooms and playrooms.

Local house officials are excited about the donation which was just announced. Annette Thurston, the Joplin house executive director said, ” The $100 million investment AbbVie has chosen to make to RMHC system will be used for expansion. Initial funding will benefit the thirty-two chapters currently conducting capital campaigns. Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Four States is not expanding programs at this time. Therefore our chapter will not receive expansion funding. We may however benefit through increased educational opportunities and system infrastructure investments.”

AbbVie is based in North Chicago and makes the arthritis treatment Humira, which is the world’s biggest-selling drug by revenue.

The following is a news release from the local RMHC director.:
