A history of the League of Women Voters

Lucille King, president of the Kansas chapter of the League of Women Voters, breaks down the history of the organization.

The League of Women Voters was formed from the suffragists movement, championing the 19th amendment and women’s right to vote. After the 19th amendment was passed, the organization still remained to effectively educate women about the politics and processes involved with voting.

The first League of Women Voters president was actually Wichita, Kansas resident Jane Brooks, who formed the first chapter of the organization in Wichita.
