2019 Empty Bowls event takes place Nov. 21
JOPLIN, Mo. — The 2019 Empty Bowls event will be held on Thursday, November 21st in Joplin.
Reminiscent of the “soup lines” from the mid 1930’s, Empty Bowls is a grass roots fundraiser brought to people in cities and towns around the world by artists and crafts people to care for and feed the hungry in their communities, according to Watered Gardens.
Patrons purchase a handcrafted pottery bowl, enjoy a serving of soup, and then have an empty bowl to take home to remind them that somewhere, someone is hungry.
Bowl presales are going on now at the Watered Gardens Forge campus, located at 705 E. 15th Street on M-F from 9a-5p for a $30 donation. Bowl “cozies” are also available for $5 and raffle items are available. Presales will last until Wednesday, November 20th and then available at Empire Market on event day for a $20 donation.
Some of the local artists who’ve made bowls: Mark Strayer of North Star Pottery, Jeff Jones of The Clay Cup, Suzi Huntington of Crack Pot Pottery Studio, Brent Skinner of Skinner Pottery, and Linda Brown of Tootsie Bowl Pottery.
There are 26 restaurants who will be donating 5 gallons of soup for patrons to enjoy on event day from their bowl. Takeout orders are available on site.
This event supports organizations that feed people and are 100% privately funded: Mission Joplin, We Care of the Four States, and Watered Gardens.
Watered Gardens Ministries serves the local Church in its mission to help the poor. We envision the local Church boldly engaged with the poor and homeless relationally responsibly and compassionately for the transformation of life. Watered Gardens is a privately funded ministry in operation since June of 2000.
