1995 Throwback: Dowe and Oprah make a promo
For Throwback Thursday, KOAM is sharing a promotional video with Dowe Quick and Oprah Winfrey.
Dowe Quick remembers the experience, “My wife Kay was going to Chicago on a business trip and I went with her. I had contacted HARPO Productions to arrange to watch a taping of the Oprah Winfrey show while we were there (I remember Oprah rode an elephant into the studio for that episode). Kay and I stayed after the show to meet Oprah and shoot the promo.” \
“We chatted briefly and Oprah was as kind to us as you would imagine. I had sent the promo script to HARPO Productions in advance. Her producer said she rarely accepted local news promo scripts but she apparently liked mine,” says Dowe.
They shot two takes, but the promotional spot never aired because Dowe referred to “KOAM News at 5:00”. That was the name of the newscast at the time, but the station decided to rebrand as “News Channel Seven”.
Years later, the name changed back to “KOAM News”, but by that time, KOAM no longer carried the Oprah Winfrey show on its station.
“To this day, I have never met another person named Oprah. No telling how many Dowes she’s met,” says Dowe.
