19-year-old arrested for attempted murder in Pittsburg drive-by shooting
PITTSBURG, Kan. – Police arrest a 19-year-old suspect in Tuesday’s drive-by shooting in Pittsburg.
On May 5, 2020, around 3:30 p.m., officers were called to the 300 block of East Monroe Street for a shooting that happened in the street. Officers got there and learned a female victim had been shot at while seated in a parked vehicle across from a tri-plex residence.
The victim told police she was sitting in her parked vehicle facing west when a white, older model sedan pulled up next to her vehicle facing east. The victim says the driver began yelling obscenities at her and pointed a handgun at her.
According to the Pittsburg Police Department, the victim said she heard a shot fired and glass from a broken rear window flying into her vehicle as the suspect vehicle drove away.
The victim was not hit by the bullet and was not injured.
Police identified Dakota J. Schmidt, 19, of Pittsburg, as the suspect involved in the shooting.
Today, May 7, investigators were checking a number of locations for Schmidt based on incoming tips, and found him in an apartment at 2601 N. Joplin Street in Pittsburg.
They arrested him and found a stolen firearm and items believed to be methamphetamine and related drug paraphernalia.
Police booked him into the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office for attempted second degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm, felony possession of stolen property, felony possession of meth and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
